she's baaaack!

Marhaban! After a 7 month hiatus and 6 weeks undercover (having decided not to leave my easily traceable blog publically available while applying for government funding) Emily's Posts is back!

Why the sudden change of sentiment? Well, I have just received news that the US State Department has awarded me a Critical Languages Scholarship for 6 weeks of advanced arabic study in Tangier, Morocco. I regret that I owe George W. Bush gratitude for anything, but I do have to thank him for sponsoring an initiative to increase funding for language programs, as it means that all my expenses for this program are covered by the government's dime. Which I guess that means I'm indebted to all you taxpayers, too. So, thanks for the contributions! I'll try to provide some amusing stories in exchange.

The basic info: I'll depart June 13 for an orientation in DC, then continue to Morocco on June 14. I'll return to the US on June 29. I'll be staying (double occupancy, sigh!) in a hotel in southwest bit of the city. The school where classes are held is a 10 minute walk away. I've got 6 hours of classes a day, 5 days a week, and I believe there are some weekend field trips thrown in.

Compared to last summer, this should be a logistical cake walk: everything is prearranged and the organizers seem VERY concerned with preserving participants' personal safety. I'm actually a wee bit concerned that this zealous oversight will chafe against my usual independent travel style, but I'm assuming the program and I can learn to accomodate each other.

More news to come, on the program and on Tangier!

Remember the rule about someone else having to call your mother from the hospital.

I didnt miss a damn thing, since I visit all my friend's blog at irregular (to say the least) intervals. Anyway, glad to know that my taxes are going to SOMETHING useful. I got itchy just writing the check this year...
